Melbourne student on track for perfect scores in every subject

As thousands of Year 12 students wait for their final results, one Melbourne teenager is on track to receive perfect scores in every subject.

If he does, he’ll become the first person in Victoria to achieve the feat.

Jerry Mao is quite possibly the state’s brightest young mind.

In Year 8, the Caulfield Grammar School student finished his first VCE subject, topping the class with a perfect score – and the success didn’t stop there.

“Maths methods, specialist maths, university extension maths and Chinese as a second language, and so far I’ve gotten perfect scores of 50 in all of them,” Mr Mao told 7 News.

“When you achieve something that you haven’t done before, it’s this that keeps me coming back for more,” he added.

The 18-year-old could have completed VCE in Year 8 but chose to finish school with his friends.

“I’ve definitely had in my mind that I wanted to stay on for every year that I could,” he said.

Caulfield Grammar School Deputy Principal Paul Runting commended the teen’s commitment to his studies, saying: “Some of the competitions that Jerry sits are three hours long and he sees it as fun.”

Away from the books, Jerry shares his wisdom with younger students.

“He actually helps them understand maths and makes it fun,” Mr Runting said.

The genius’s parents are also chuffed about their son’s commitment to his studies, with his dad James saying: “We’re very proud of everything he has achieved in the school.”

Not only is he academic, but the maths wiz also plays the piano, violin, and percussion, and is a member of the school band and orchestra.

But it’s maths where his heart lies – with big dreams to become an algorithm architect at a global tech company.

It’s now a nervous wait for Jerry to find out his score.

“It would definitely be nice if I got a high score, but we’ll see what happens,” he said.
