Melbourne landlord offers 'renovated' shed for $350 a week

Several people mocked the rental in the city's eastern suburbs which was advertised on Facebook this week.

A "backyard shed" on offer in Melbourne's eastern suburbs is the latest in a long list of questionable rental properties across the country as desperate tenants try to find suitable housing.

The accommodation is "recently renovated" according to the poster who advertised the property on Facebook this week for an asking price of $350 a week including bills.

The price is arguably cheaper than many properties in the Croydon area where the median rental price is $500, according to realestate.com.au — up 4.2 per cent on last year. But this particular residence — being flogged as a "bungalow" — is looking a little worse for wear.

"Mmmm. I can just smell the mould from here," one person said of the somewhat dilapidated building surrounded by an overgrown garden. "$350/week [not month as the title says] for half of someone’s backyard asbestos shed. Quick everyone! This dream home won’t last long," they added.

The chosen tenant would also be required to share a shower and a toilet with one other person, as well as the kitchen and "all cooking amenities if need be". The number of bedrooms wasn't specified in the ad but it may be a shared living environment with at least one other tenant.

Photos shared on Facebook show a combined laundry and bathroom area. There's also a dividing wall next to the kitchen with an open living space. It's not known if this is considered the bedroom.

The carpet appears new with freshly painted walls throughout. However, the poster didn't detail what the renovations involved.

Some Facebook users weren't sold on the rental offering, with one labelling it "depressing as hell". Another simply posted a "sick" emoji, suggesting they were turned off by the residence.

Frustrated Aussie renters

Aussies are growing increasingly tired of sub-par rental properties that are being flogged for extortionate prices. One woman on TikTok has become known for her rental property rants, calling landlords "greedy" and accusing them of exploiting the property crisis.

Recently, Rach McQueen took aim at a backyard caravan being listed for $650 a week in Queensland. But the chosen tenant would be required to move it to their own land. In a previous video showing a "shantytown" rental in Mullumbimby, NSW, the opinionated social media user said landlords are "profiteering" off people who can not afford housing with many agreeing rental pricing is getting "ridiculous".
