Wu Yin-ming, from Taiwan’s northern Hsinchu City, claims he was treating a friend to a mutton hot pot when they discovered a dead rat in the stew.

At a restaurant in Zhunan township on the island’s western county of Miaoli, the pot arrived with the carcass floating with the food inside.

His photos show the dead rat, which may have drowned or been boiled alive, buried among cabbage and corn in the metal pot of stew.

“I’m buying mutton stew for a friend and a dead rat has appeared,” Mr Wu said.

“What’s this? Buy one, get one free?”

The man said the restaurant gave him a full refund for the two pots ordered.

But it was believed the business did not compensate him further for the unexpected extra ingredient.
