Man's bizarre clash with police after being stopped for speeding

A man pulled over for doing almost twice the speed limit told police they hold “no authority” over him in a bizarre video which has since gone viral and angered many on social media.

The motorcyclist was stopped by officers in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney, after he was allegedly clocked doing 106km/h in a 60km zone last year.

While standing by the side of Lady Wakehurst Drive in Lillydale, the 44-year-old driver began filming his subsequent exchange with Highway Patrol.

“Just remember, your choice creates your destiny, not mine,” he can be heard telling the officer who replied, “ok, I’ve made my choice and you’ve made yours, let’s get on with it".

“That’s right,” the rider agreed. “I’m staying calm, I’m not trespassing.”

“I haven’t alleged that,” the seemingly frustrated officer responded. “It’s a public roadway, how could you be?”

The accused then went on to explain that he’s talking about “common law” which “applies to every man and woman that walks the earth”.

“It doesn’t vary. Common law is common law. It’s the law of the land. Admiralty maritime law is the law that you enforce. It requires consent.”

The officer appeared lost by this point.

“Why on earth would we want to go down the path of maritime law?” he questioned. “I’m not the water police, big fella.”

The now-agitated rider, who told police in another video that he didn't own a driver's licence, went on to say “they don’t even tell you, they’ve lied to you as well”.

“You see where this is going?” he said, to which the policeman responded: “Downhill for you is all that I see".

“I’m not trying to fight you,” the rider added.

“Then produce a licence [and you’ll be] free to go,” the officer can be heard saying. “That’s it, no problem.”

As the accused continued to push his argument, he edged towards the road.

“Just be careful near the road mate, we don’t want you run over,” the officer told him.

“We are still obligated to ensure your safety, just come away from the road.”

The adamant rider said he is aware of what he is doing.

“Constable, I do not stand under your authority,” he claimed. “Have I made myself clear?”

‘Above the law’

The video posted to TikTok on Sunday with the hashtags ‘don’t comply’ and ‘know your rights,’ has since been viewed more than 64,700 times.

Many users were furious with the rider for putting others in harm's way.

“What is wrong with you,” one person wrote. “106 in a 60 zone. You obviously don't care about the safety of other people.”

“Far out, another above the law,” someone else said.

While many praised the police officer’s patience.

“This copper deserves a pay rise dealing with this guy’s s**t,” one user said.

“He was being nice about your safety,” another added. ”I just see a nice copper working. Anything else we missed?”

The author behind the post, Policing the Police, was quick to respond.

“Detained a living man, threatened to arrest a living man, hand on pistol, intimidation, plenty more you missed,” he wrote.

“Loved your calmness and professionalism,” one fan raved.

“Well done to you,” added another.

While another encouraged him to “Keep doing what you’re doing.”

Police penalty

In a statement to Yahoo News Australia, police say officers had been patrolling the Royal National Park following an increase in motorcycle fatalities when they clocked the driver doing over 100km/h in a 60km/h zone on June 14 2021.

"Police spoke with the rider, a 44-year-old man, before he was issued a penalty notice for class A motor vehicle exceed speed over 30k/h and not ride motorbike with at least one hand on handlebars," they said.
