Man sits on traffic island with sign in desperate search for work

A man’s attempt to find full-time work has been shared by hundreds online, after he was spotted sitting on a traffic island with a sign displaying his qualifications and experience.

The man’s efforts in Queensland caught the eye of many, after it was shared online on the Bloke’s Advice Facebook page.

“I know times are tough but if anyone around the Sunshine Coast (Cooroy, Gympie, Noosa) area has anything going that fits with his qualifications, or knows someone that does, give the old fella a buzz.” the post read.

“Blokes like this, that are actively searching/looking is absolutely amazing in today’s society. Hope someone reaches out to him.”

The job seeker is 62-year-old Rex Fairbrother, who took up post at an intersection of Tewantin Road and Elm Street in Cooroy on Monday and Tuesday mornings this week, targeting those who start early.

“I want a job and I need a job, and I need it more than I want it,” Mr Fairbrother told Yahoo7.

He has worked as a rigger, dogman and crane driver for the past 35 years all around the country and said he recently relocated to the Sunshine Coast.

Mr Fairbrother added he just wants to find the right job and and if he did he would be ecstatic.

And since his search for work was shared on Wednesday, he has been contacted by numerous people.

On Thursday, he has responded to about 25 messages and another few phone calls.

“So far I haven’t had any luck, but I’m still expecting a few more calls this afternoon,” he said.

“Everyone’s rooting for me but no one’s offering me a job.”

But that’s not going to put him off his search.

“If I don’t have anything tonight by the time I go to bed I’ll be back down there tomorrow morning,” Mr Fairbrother said.

While Mr Fairbrother has not been presented the right opportunity yet this time, he encourages other people who might be looking for work to give his method a go.

“I’d love to see some other people doing it because it works. You’re going to do ok.. you’ve got to persevere though,” he said.

The online post on Bloke’s Advice Facebook page about Mr Fairbrother has been shared more than 740 times in less than a day, and many people are wishing the job seeker well.

“Give the bloke a chance,” one Facebook user who shared the post wrote.

“Hope you get a job soon,” said another, while a third commented, “Good in ya mate. I hope you find a job.”
