Cause of death revealed after man found in crashed Mercedes with dead mate nearby

A post-mortem examination carried out on the body of Cameron Martin, who was found dead after his Mercedes Benz collided with a tree on Friday night, shows he was shot in the chest.

The 47-year-old Gold Coast man was treated by first responders at the scene after his C200 series sedan fatally crashed off Tallebudgera Creek Road on Friday night.

“The death has been confirmed as suspicious,” police said in a statement Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, police confirmed that Martin had suffered what they described as a “puncture wound” to the chest before the crash. Investigators have now confirmed that the cause of death is believed to be from a gunshot wound to the chest.

In the hours before his death, Martin was seen at a nearby pub having a beer with friend and business partner Shane Ross, a member of the Comanchero bikie organisation.

On Monday, Ross was found dead in long grass near a park about 1.5km from the crash site. He was found with injuries to the back of the head, which have been reported as a gunshot wound. A post mortem will be conducted today on the 36-year-old Ross to confirm that.

Acting Superintendent Brendan Smith said police were still working out the circumstances of what happened as investigators try to piece together a timeline in the suspected double homicide.

“Obviously some sort of altercation has occurred and as a result, this male person is now deceased,” Supt Smith told reporters on Monday after Ross’ body was discovered.

“It would be coincidental if both incidents aren’t connected,” he added.

Queensland police said motorists reported seeing an injured man walking along the side of Tallebudgera Creek Road around the time of Friday’s crash and are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed a person, or has dash cam footage in the vicinity, to come forward.

Investigations into the men’s deaths are continuing.
