Man dies in freak accident in McDonald's drive-thru
A man has died in a freak accident in a McDonald’s drive-thru after becoming trapped between his vehicle and a pole.
The 69-year-old man was driving his ute to his local McDonalds in Mansfield, in the US state of Ohio, at lunchtime on Wednesday (local time) when the tragic accident occurred.
The victim was identified as Gary McQuillen, and while his official cause of death yet to be announced, police have speculated how the accident may have happened.
Mansfield police detective Rob Skoprits said Mr McQuillen may have dropped some money outside of his vehicle while he was waiting in the drive-thru queue and reached out to get it before getting trapped between the pole and his car.
"That's just preliminary what we're thinking. Until the autopsy is done we won't know the cause of death," Mr Skropits said, according to the Mansfield News Journal.
Mr McQuillen suffered severe injuries to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Former classmates of the victim shared their shock on a Facebook page for their school alumni.
“No. Don't want to believe it. So sad,” one woman wrote.
“This is the saddest thing I have heard in a long time. Sympathy to his family,” another said.
Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.
