'Lazy' mailman failed to deliver 10,000 mail items

An Australia Post mailman who was found with 10,000 undelivered mail items in his house has pleaded guilty to theft charges, The Age reports.

Mark Baguio, 28, was a postal delivery officer in the Newport and Williamstown areas of Victoria between February 2009 and February 2011.

Prosecutor Kristie Eales told the court Australia Post was advised that a yellow mail delivery bag containing 755 unaddressed articles had been dumped in a rubbish bin outside Baguio's apartment building in January 2011.

Official checks linked Baguio to the mail bag, as well as hundreds of other mail items found by police investigators in his home.

Baguio is said to have told the court he became 'overawed' with the responsibilities of his job as time went by and lost the ability to cope.

Defence lawyer Paul Galbally told the court Baguio had suffered from a build up of stress following the death of his father.

Ms Eales also said Baguio had later admitted to being 'too lazy' to deliver the mail.

It is understood he did not financially benefit from hoarding the mail.

Baguio pleaded guilty to two charges of theft, and was convicted by magistrate Felicity Broughton and ordered to undertake 120 hours of unpaid community service and submit for a mental health assessment.

According to The Age, Mr Galbally said his client was isolated and lonely man who had a limited education.
