Parts of Australia set to cop 'record high temperatures' over long weekend

Some Australians are set to sizzle through a scorching hot long weekend due to a large hot air mass moving across Australia.

Sky News chief meteorologist Tom Saunders said the air mass is “leading to near record high October temperatures”.

But while Queensland is set to sizzle, particularly in the state’s southeast, NSW is in for a cooler Labour Day long weekend.

Queensland

Temperatures in South East Queensland are set to reach 10-11C higher than the monthly average on Monday and Tuesday.

Brisbanites are in for a toasty weekend with a max of 31 on Saturday.

Cloudy skies and a northeasterly will see Sunday cool to a high of 26 before a scorching hot Queen’s Birthday on Monday at 33 followed by 34 on Tuesday.

But if you thought that was hot, spare a thought for those in the state’s west.

Bedourie and Birdsville are in for highs of about 38 from Sunday and Monday after 37 on Saturday.

Part of North Queensland through to the Far North will be cooler with tops in the high 20s to low 30s.

Some showers are forecast for Friday in areas north of Ingham.

Bushfire warnings remain in place throughout the state with very high fire danger in Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Maranoa and Warrego, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, and Peninsula in the far north.

NSW and the ACT

Residents in Sydney’s CBD won’t be feeling the heat this long weekend with showers on Saturday and a high of 19.

NRL Grand Final Day in the Harbour City will see a slight rise to a high of 25 before a sweltering Labour Day on Monday at 30.

Similar conditions are forecast up the Central Coast towards Wyong.

Penrith in the city’s west will be a bit warmer with a high of 29 on Sunday before it reaches a searing 34 on Monday.

In the NSW northwest, Wilcannia will reach 37 on Saturday and 40 on Sunday.

Some showers are forecast in Canberra for Friday and Saturday.

Residents in the city can expect a high of 19 on Saturday and 27 on Sunday.

Monday will see a high of 24.

The NSW Hunter Region has a total fire ban in effect with a severe chance of bush fires.

The North Coast and New England areas have a very high chance of bushfires along with the Illawarra and Greater Sydney regions.

Victoria

In the southern capital, residents are in for a partly cloudy Saturday with a high of 20 followed by a warmer Sunday of 27.

Showers will start the working week with 19 on Monday before it cools to 15 on Tuesday.

Residents in the state’s north near Swan Hill are in for 28 on Saturday and 32 on Sunday.

It will then drop by 10 degrees on Monday.

Mount Hotham in the Victorian Alps of the Great Dividing Range will enjoy a high of 11 on Saturday and 13 on Sunday.

Monday will drop to 6 with showers or snow predicted.

Victoria’s area of Mallee, which includes Swan Hill and Mildura, has fire restrictions in place with a high fire danger rating.

South Australia

Adelaide residents are in for a balmy Saturday with a high of 33.

Sunday and Monday will be cooler though at 21 and 18 respectively with some showers.

Further north and Snowtown will hit as high as 37 on Saturday. There will be some reprieve from the heat on Sunday though as it drops to 26 before 20 on Monday.

The North West Pastoral District has some fire restrictions in place with a very high fire danger rating in place as do Flinders and West Coast, which includes Elliston and Streaky Bay.

Western Australia

It won’t hit 30 until Tuesday for Perth residents.

The weekend is forecast for temperatures in the low 20s with a possible morning shower on Saturday.

Monday will reach 26.

In the state’s south, Walpole, Denmark and Windy Harbour can expect some showers across Saturday and Sunday with cooler temperatures than their northern neighbours.

Saturday will see a high of 17, followed by 18 on Sunday and 19 on Monday.

Very high fire danger warnings are in place for Goldfields, Gascoyne Inland, Ashburton Inland, West Pilbara Coast, West Kimberley Coast and Kimberley Inland.

Severe is in place for the north and South Interior.

Tasmania

Hobart residents are in for a wet start to October with a weekend of light rain.

Although there’s only a five per cent chance of showers on Saturday, with a high of 17, Sunday will see between 2-8mm of rain and a high of 20.

Monday will be similar but a bit cooler at 16.

Launceston can expect showers on Sunday and Monday with highs of about 17 both days.

Saturday is forecast for cloudy skies with around the same temperature.

Northern Territory

Darwin’s in for a toasty weekend to start on temperature with Saturday through to Tuesday about 34.

Alice Springs will be slightly warmer with temperatures reaching 36. It will slightly cool on Tuesday to 32.

A severe fire danger warning remains in place for Darwin and Adelaide River.
