'Just stunned': Cat returns to family after disappearing 10 years ago

A Texas family has been given a gift they thought they would never receive after they were reunited with their beloved pet cat almost 11 years after it vanished.

Fergie was just a kitten when she was taken in by the Fulton family in 2006 but when they took a holiday abroad, the adventurous feline decided to take a trip of her own and never came home.

To put that into context, in 2006 John Howard was still the Prime Minister, Justin Timberlake had the number-one hit with SexyBack and you were probably still using MySpace.

So you can only imagine the family’s shock when a local resident came across Fergie earlier this month and decided to take her into the vet to see if she had a microchip.

It turns out while Elyse Fulton and her family left the country, it seems Fergie was not quite as ambitious in her travel efforts, not even leaving the suburb.

“They said, ‘Are you missing Fergie?’ And I was like, ‘Sure, like for 10 years now’,” Ms Fulton recalled the phone call she received from her local vet to Fox News.

“I was just stunned. I was absolutely blown out of the water.”

Despite her decade-long absence, Fergie has wasted no time re-establishing her position in the family.

“She went right back to being the princess cat she was before she left. She’s sleeping on the bed. She knows what a litter box is and all that. Eating good and, again, just seems really happy to be home,” Ms Fulton added.
