'It's just starting': Cocaine Cassie speaks of Colombian prison romance

Convicted drug smuggler Cassie Sainsbury has hinted she has found a new romance in her Colombian prison after splitting with her fiancé.

The 23-year-old from South Australia is serving a six-year sentence in Bogota’s El Buen Pastor women’s prison, convicted for trying to smuggle 5.8 kilograms of cocaine concealed in a box of headphones.

In April Sainsbury revealed she had broken up with her fiancé Scott Broadbridge earlier in the year and has since hinted at a possible same-sex relationship behind bars.

“It’s something that’s just starting,” she told New Idea.

Sainsbury’s mother Lisa Evans told the magazine if her daughter is in a same-sex relationship she is supportive.

“Love is love and as long as Cassie’s happy, that’s all I care about,” she told the publication.

Sainsbury has been in the custody of Colombian authorities since April 11 and continues to maintain her innocence.

She claims she bought the headphones as gifts from a man who promised her a cheap deal.

However, it has since been revealed that her movements in the lead-up to her Colombia visit gained the attention of the US Drug Enforcement Agency.

Security footage from the airport shows the moment Ms Sainsbury arrived to leave Colombia, but instead staff noticed a red flag on her passport and notified authorities.

Mr Broadbridge flew to Colombia to support Sainsbury at the start of the trial, but left in May 2017.

The 23-year-old said the couple ended their engagement at the start of this year.
