Jay Slater missing – latest: Mother gives GoFundMe update as teen ‘spotted watching Euros’ after last contact

Jay Slater’s mother has issued an update over the fundraiser that was launched to help find her missing son as the search for him in Tenerife continues for an eleventh day.

Debbie Duncan, 55, announced on Thursday that she is withdrawing some of the money raised in the GoFundMe to put towards the search efforts, as she vowed the teenager’s loved ones will not lose hope and will return home with him.

It comes as the local mayor of the town of Santiago del Teide, Emilio Jose Navarro, said Spanish police have spoken to several people who believe they may have seen the 19-year-old watching Euro 2024 matches after his last contact with friends.

Police are examining grainy CCTV footage from the town, which is around three-and-a-half miles from the mountainous Rural de Teno park – his last known location – to determine whether it is a sighting of the apprentice bricklacker.

The image, shared by the family to media outlets, shows a person walking through the town and was captured around 10 hours after Jay's phone last pinged.

TikTok explorer says he is meeting with Jay Slater’s family

15:24 , Holly Evans

Paul Arnott, 29, who runs the TikTok account Down the Rapids is among those who has been searching for Jay Slater after he disappeared last Monday. Since being in Tenerife, he has posted 66 videos with each racking up hundreds of thousands of views.

His efforts have attracted the interest of the teenager’s family, who have reportedly contacted him and arranged a meeting on Thursday.

“I’m meeting the family today,” he told the Telegraph. “I’ve been speaking with Brad’s mum, Rachel. They wanted to bring me food but I said no.

“They said they wanted to meet me. They said they’re really proud of what I’m doing.”

15:19 , Athena Stavrou

The Independent’s Holly Evans reports from Tenerife:

In the Mirador La Cruz de Hilda cafe, which overlooks the dramatic Masca valley, the occasional hiker who passes through for a snack appears bewildered by the number of cameras and journalists who have gathered at the scene.

Just across the road, a sharp climb upwards from the village, is the place where Jay Slater’s phone was last located before he disappeared. Police have carried out extensive searches in the area surrounding it but appear to have moved their focus further northwards.

After a few hours of searching this morning, they departed the scene and are yet to return with no other search teams seen to be taking part.

Trolls making our nightmare worse, says family friend

14:50 , Jane Dalton

The mother of Jay Slater’s best friend has told the BBC that a deluge of online trolling has added to their “living nightmare”.

Rachel Hargreaves, 34, who is in Tenerife with Mr Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, is the mother of Brad, who travelled to the Canary Islands with Mr Slater.

Ms Hargreaves, a chef from Accrington in Lancashire, said a troll even impersonated her late mother, who died eight months ago.

“The picture of my mum is an old one but it was on my Facebook and somehow they have got their hands on it,” she said.

“We’re living the worst nightmare you can live and this does not help. I’m a strong person and that affected me. Things don’t normally get to me.”

14:30 , Athena Stavrou

The Independent’s Holly Evans reports from Tenerife:

Speaking from his office in the town hall, local mayor Emilio Navarro stated his belief that Jay Slater had not reached Santiago del Teide.

“The Guardia Civil sent us an email asking for our security cameras. We could not give it to them as they are organised through a separate company, so the police are speaking to them. But that CCTV picture is not from us and I do not recognise that place - I do not think it is in Santiago del Tiede and he is not here.

“We will help the police but it makes no sense. We have had family and journalists here but we have seen no police.”

Missing Jay Slater’s family use donations to fund extended stay on Tenerife

14:00 , Athena Stavrou

The mother of missing Jay Slater has said she will use donations to fund her stay on Tenerife as the hunt for her son continues into a second week.

Debbie Duncan said the £36,000 raised by more than 3,200 individual donations will be used to support mountain rescue teams, and to cover her own accommodation and food costs during her extended stay on the island.

Ms Duncan flew out to join the search for her son on June 18, the day after he went missing.

Donations flooded in after a fundraiser was set up by Lucy Law, his friend and the last person to speak to him.

The GoFundMe appeal, “Get Jay Slater home”, raised thousands within hours as concern for the teenager grew.

In an update on Thursday, Ms Duncan said: “First, I would like to thank everyone for your support, kind messages, and good wishes. It’s difficult to wrap our heads around what is happening right now, but we are not losing hope that we will find Jay and return home together.

“We are currently working with GoFundMe to withdraw part of the funds, which are being safely held. I wanted to share that these funds will be used to support the mountain rescue teams who are tirelessly searching for Jay.

“Additionally, since our stay in Tenerife needs to be extended, we will also use the funds to cover accommodation and food expenses. I’m surrounded by wonderful people who are by my side, but far from their loved ones, so we’ll also be using part of these funds to fly them to Tenerife so we can support each other during these dark times.

“Thank-you again for all your donations and support, this means the world to us.”

Jay Slater’s employer hits out at trolls ‘cruel’ emails

13:00 , Athena Stavrou

Jay Slater’s employers have hit out at “cruel” trolls emailing them about the 19-year-old and his disappearance.

The building firm, PH Build Group, had previously spoken out to say the picture being painted of the bricklaying apprentice was “just not true”.

Sharing one email sent to them, they wrote: “This is just one of many emails sent to us along with some great reviews. These people are trying to ruin people’s lives and businesses sat behind a screen looking for attention.

“Everyone may have their own theories and feelings but to publicly post them knowing you are going hurt people is just cruel. Jay’s family shouldn’t have to endure this. The only thing that should matter right now is getting a 19-year-old son back to his family where he belongs.”

Bar owners not seen Jay following unconfirmed reports of him ‘watching the Euros’

12:30 , Holly Evans, in Tenerife

After unconfirmed reports that Jay Slater had been seen “watching the Euros” at a nearby town, The Independent travelled to Los Gigantes which sits at the foot of the mountains where the teenager has gone missing.

However, bar owners in the seaside town had little known knowledge, with sports bar owners stating that he had not been spotted in the vicinity.

“We’ve not seen him,” said the owner of Richardsons, a British sports bar in the town centre which is one of the only bars showing the football.

Jay Slater’s family are ‘utterly broken’ and ‘still holding out hope’ to find teen in Tenerife

The family of missing teenager Jay Slater say they are “utterly broken” as the search continues in Tenerife for a tenth day with no clues to shed light on his disappearance.

The 19-year-old has not been heard from since last Monday morning, when he contacted a friend shortly after 8am to say he was lost in the Rural de Teno park and had only one per cent phone battery.

Former detective Mark Williams-Thomas has now flown over from the UK after offering the family his assistance, as Spanish police and sniffer dogs continue to scour the mountainous region in the north of the island.

Police searching for missing hiker Jay Slater have rescued a Scottish hiker from the same Tenerife national park in Spain.

The 51-year-old hiker from Scotland was rescued on Friday during a search for Mr Slater, 19, who went missing a week ago, police said on Tuesday.

The Scot was found “tired and disoriented” having gone into a “difficult” area not suitable for travel.

Police said “he was located by the agents and the rescue team who helped him get out of the ravine”.

“We want to thank these neighbours for giving alert to this situation because, due to the difficulty and lack of communication in the area, this hiker would not have managed to get out by his own means without the help received.”

ICYMI: Family ‘utterly broken’ but mission remains to find Jay Slater alive

Wednesday 26 June 2024 20:33 , Tom Barnes

Earlier on Wednesday, Mark Williams-Thomas, a private investigator, spoke to the press in Tenerife this afternoon on behalf of Jay Slater’s family, including The Independent’s Holly Evans.

He told reporters: “They are a very, very united family and they are very supportive and their one mission is to find out what happened to Jay.

“They still live with the hope that Jay will return and that he is not safe, but still alive. They themselves have been out searching and have put out pictures and posters and of course, they are responding to as many enquiries as they possibly can.”

He added they had provided him with an “in-depth insight” into what had happened in the hours leading up to his disappearance.

Asked how the family have been coping, he responded: “They are utterly broken, having done this many times and having been a family liaison officer, they are an incredibly united family.

“Not just in terms of the family but also the friends that are here to support. They are all very focused in terms of finding Jay. The problem is they are now without information, a lot of information was coming in initially but they are now without much information.”

Father of Jay Slater says he is in ‘living hell’ after son’s disappearance

“Somebody must know something.”

Despite efforts by specialist dog teams and police focusing on the rugged terrain of Rural de Teno National Park, the search has been likened to “looking for a needle in a haystack”.

Mr Slater’s family and friends have been actively seeking help, putting up missing posters, and raising funds for the search.

He told reporters including The Independent’s Holly Evans: “There are people out there who have been vile. I’ve listened to messages and read messages from people, there are people out there who have phoned up and said we’ve got Jay hostage, we’ve got Jay captive and they need to pay.

“There are some really vile people who have done that, they’ve tried to hack some of the social media sites, they’ve attacked some of the family. This is unacceptable. You’ve got a young lad who is missing and the family deserve respect. I would urge anyone on social media to think before you post.”

“Had he been on the road, he would have been seen by numerous tourists. It’s a very narrow road so they wouldn’t have missed him, they would have seen him,” Mr Beckett told Reuters.

Spanish locals know little about Jay Slater disappearance

Wednesday 26 June 2024 12:51 , Sian Elvin

Holly Evans reports from the scene in Tenerife:

Despite the interest among British press and tourists, Spanish locals appear to know very little about the disappearance. While Jay Slater’s photo has been plastered onto ATMs and bus stops, the Spanish police have made very few comments on the case and not much is known about the progression of the investigation.

While a group of British people from Manchester on holiday told The Independent last night that they had been checking the Facebook group chats daily, locals appear confused by the press attention.

Adela, a cafe worker in the tourist area of Los Cristianos, shook her head and simply said: “People always get lost in the mountains if they’re not careful, it just happens.”

Holly Evans reports live from Tenerife:

Located on Veronica’s Strip in Playa de Las Americas, the nightclub where Jay Slater spent his evening before going missing stands at the end of a long run of busy bars.

The majority of them open until 5am, they are currently inundated with British teenagers celebrating their A-Levels, with cheap drinks and package spirit deals available all down the street.

Drugs are easily accessible, with groups selling Class A, cannabis and balloons along the pavement.

Worried relatives and friends are still searching for a sighting of British teenager Jay Slater after he vanished on the island of Tenerife.

The 19-year-old was on his first ever holiday without his family when he vanished as he walked back to his accommodation last Monday morning.

He had gone to stay with two people he had met at the NRG music festival and, having missed the last bus back, embarked on what would have been an 11-hour walk.
