'I went numb': Woman baffled after touching sea creature on Tasmanian beach

A Tasmanian woman has made a bizarre find on a beach, which she claims left her feeling numb.

The woman found the creature washed up and posted a picture of it on Facebook on Saturday.

“Me and my mother kept seeing them on the beach and when I touched it I went numb it's slimy but hard what kind of sea creature is it?” she wrote.

She said she touched it with her finger, but her mother’s foot also went numb after she accidentally brushed against it.

The woman added she found a number of them along the water.

“It looks like a brain. Someone might be missing it,” another woman joked.

Dr Simon Grove, the curator of invertebrate zoology at Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, identified the creature as an ascidian, also known as a sea squirt.

Ascidians are prey for otters, crabs and other sea creatures.

It’s not known why the woman felt numb after touching the sea creature, however, some ascidians can produce chemicals to fight off potential predators.
