Human corpse thrown onto highway in five-car pile up

A corpse has been flung onto a highway after the funeral home vehicle it was travelling in was rear-ended.

The bizarre incident on Friday (local time) was described by police as an "ejection of mortal remains".

A ute towing a horse trailer crashed into the back of the funeral vehicle on a highway in the New Jersey city of Paramus, in the United States.

Five vehicles were involved altogether as traffic came to a standstill, however it is unclear what triggered the crash initially.

Images later shared by the Paramus Police Department show the disturbing crash site, with both the funeral home vehicle and ute sustaining significant damage.

Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg told the Daily Voice the body did not sustain any damage and was quickly taken away by another vehicle. A stretcher is visible in one of the photos shared by authorities.

A female driver involved in the crash described the incident as "very scary", adding it "felt like a dream".

Three people sustained minor injuries in the crash and were taken to hospital, while the horse was unscathed. Police also shared a photo of the horse by the roadside.

Many on social media were in disbelief over the incident, with some users saying those involved were lucky they did not sustain serious injuries.

In a separate funeral home mishap just months earlier, a family were "traumatised" after discovering the wrong person inside their relative's coffin.
