Hospital cleaners accused of sick act with stillborn's ashes

A married couple have been charged with the abandonment of a dead body.

A couple grieving the loss of their unborn child were dealt another unimaginable blow when discovering their stillborn baby's ashes had been taken and allegedly thrown away.

Two former hospital cleaners have now been accused of stealing the golden urn which was holding the ashes in January, Associated Press reported.

Authorities in the US city of Atlanta have charged married couple Anilus and Rosnie Frederic with theft and abandonment of a dead body.

Kieran Massey told local network WAGA-TV he and his partner Carla Watson were keeping the ashes inside a teddy bear for "emotional support" after their daughter's stillborn in August.

She was visiting hospital for treatment and brought the bear with her. When she returned to her room from the shower, it was gone.

"We cried all night that night thinking about everything." Kieran said. “Losing her plus the ashes was a big heartbreak."

Investigations from the hospital led to the discovery of the bear in a bin in the hospital laundry, leading to charges against the Frederics.

Court documents allege the urn was later found in their home.

“I pray for them, hope they get better mentally and physically, but I just don’t understand why they would do something like this,” Kieran told local media.

The Frederics have been released on bail and will front court at a later date. The Wellstar Kennestone Hospital has confirmed the pair are no longer employed at the hospital.
