Store's 'outrageous' reason for blocking disabled parking spots

A Queensland Harvey Norman store has come under fire after it erected a temporary tent to house sale goods at the expense of disabled parking bays.

One disgruntled shopper took to Facebook on Sunday to share an image of the weekend sale tent in the car park of the store in Rothwell, 30km north of Brisbane.

The photo shows several barriers blocking two disabled parking bays to provide access to the entrance of the tent.

And other users were equally as angered, questioning the tent’s location.

“Outrageous, why not use conventional parks?” one person queried.

“So bad!” another proclaimed.

However Angie Brunet, operations manager at the store, told Yahoo News Australia that the store had taken into consideration the location of disabled parking bays when choosing the tent’s placement.

She said the close proximity of a further two bays meant disabled visitors would still be able to access the store.

“There are still two bays next to the entrance,” she said.

Ms Brunet pointed out the tent’s location was placed on normal bays but to provide safe access from the store to the tent, the disabled bays had been blocked off.

Debate was rife earlier this month when a motorist in Sydney parked the wrong way across a disabled parking spot.
