Warning over fake $50 notes – but can you spot the differences?

A number of fake $50 notes are in circulation but can you spot the differences between them and authentic ones?

Geraldton Police, in Western Australia, tweeted photos of the fake notes on Thursday warning residents to remain vigilant.

Sergeant Paul Johnson told Yahoo News Australia while the notes are of “terrible” quality, in this case they managed to fool a taxi driver working in the dark.

“You’ll notice in the picture the printer has lost ink on the edge of the note leading to this pink edge,” he said.

“There’s also a broken line across the word ‘fifty’ and across the numerals on the other side.”

The notes also don’t have clear windows in the corners.

He added they’ve been circulating in Geraldton for the past few months but there are “not a massive amount of them”.

The notes differ from those found in circulation last year in the ACT as these ones don’t have the see-through window and appear to have security numbers.

However, they have the similar Chinese characters and the broken diagonal lines.

“They’re an aid for Chinese visitors and expats to understand Australian currency,” he said.

“When you see it in person it borders on toy money. A child could probably tell the difference.”

Sgt Johnson said anyone who receives any of the fake money is encouraged to call police.

He also encouraged people to check their change and notes.
