Drunk man claims he was offered as human sacrifice after waking up in coffin

A terrified man claims he was offered up as a human sacrifice after passing out during a heavy drinking session.

Víctor Hugo Mica Alvarez, 30, says the shocking incident occurred when he attended the Mother Earth festival in El Alto, Bolivia, earlier this month.

At the annual event, people give thanks to Mother Earth — or the goddess Pachamama — by making offerings.

Mr Alvarez says he passed out at the festival after drinking heavily, allegedly only to wake up hours later in a coffin 80km away.

"Last night was the pre-entry [of the festival], we went dancing. And afterwards I don't remember," he told local media.

"The only thing I remember is that I thought I was in my bed, I wanted to get up to go urinate and I couldn't move.

"When I pushed the coffin, I was able to break a glass that it had and that way I was able to get out.

"They wanted to use me as a sullu."

The term sullu refers to offerings — such as coca leaves or colourful sweets — that are commonly made during the celebration.

However, some say ancient human sacrifices and offerings are still carried out in secret.

Despite his insistence he was buried alive, the 30-year-old said police have dismissed his wild story.

Officers reportedly told the man he was still drunk and told him to sleep it off, the New York Post reports.

Woman found alive after banging on coffin at her funeral

The alleged incident comes months after a woman about to be buried banged on the lid of her coffin to say she was still alive.

The incident took place in Chiclayo province, Peru, in May.

Rosa Isabel Cespedes Callaca, age not reported, had been pronounced dead after a car accident on the Chiclayo-Picsi road, in Lambayeque.

Her relatives had been carrying her coffin through the cemetery for burial when they noticed noises coming from inside the box.
