Dramatic rescue of fisherman bitten by shark while aboard boat
Video footage has emerged of the moment a fisherman was winched to safety after being bitten by a shark near the Bahamas.
The 51-year-old was attacked by the shark on Monday (local time) while aboard a boat, the US Coast Guard said.
The man’s mates on the Shear Water fishing boat called the Coast Guard around 12:50 pm, saying he was losing blood so they placed a tourniquet around his arm.
Crew from Air Station Miami arrived at the scene and lifted the man from the fishing boat near Bimini.
Video footage of the rescue shows a crew member being lowered down onto the boat as it sits in the middle of the ocean.
A large cage follows and is winched back up with the injured man inside.
The 51-year-old was rushed to hospital in Miami and is reportedly in stable condition.
"This was the best possible outcome to a truly terrifying situation," Sean Connett, command duty officer at Coast Guard District Seven, said.
"This individual was fortunate a fellow crew member was able to render aid prior to the Coast Guard’s arrival which, allowed for a quick extraction from the vessel."
