Teen catches massive 130kg shark in Sydney waterway: 'Insane'

A Sydney teenager was fishing with friends in Middle Harbour on the weekend when his line caught a huge 2.8m bull shark.

Footage of Addison Hodge, 15, shows the year 10 student from Sydney's North Shore struggling to reel in the large shark which reportedly took him 45 minutes to haul in.

It only took "a few seconds" to realise he'd "hooked something pretty big" he told Mosman Collective, and because of its size and strength, it "nearly pulled me into the water".

The young fisherman estimated the shark could weigh a huge 130 kilograms, according to the radio station 2GB, admitting it was "insane."

Shark attacks in Middle Bay

The mammoth catch comes a week after diving instructor Simon Nellist was tragically killed by a great white shark in Sydney's Little Bay.

It was Sydney's first fatal shark attack since 1963 when actress Marcia Hathaway was killed at Sugarloaf Bay in Middle Harbour.

In the last century, seven people have reportedly died due to shark attacks in the area, North Sydney Living reported.

Sugarloaf Point saw the first fatal attack in 1916, according to the publication, with two around Bantry Bay following in 1942 and two more at Sugarloaf Bay and Balmoral 13 years later.

Before Ms Hathaway's death in 1963, there was another attack just three years earlier.

Monster bull shark shocks fishermen in Sydney Harbour

Earlier this month, a huge bull shark was reeled in by two men in Sydney Harbour and one of the fishermen says it's not the first time he has caught one in the area.

In a TikTok video shared by user @huss_fisho, viewers were treated to an up-close look at a catch and release, as one of the fishermen tried to get the shark back in the water.
