Hiker's dramatic mountaintop rescue after being bitten by brown snake

A woman was rescued in dramatic fashion from a national park in Queensland after being bitten by a snake.

On Monday the 20-year-old victim was walking in Mount Coolum National Park on the Sunshine Coast when she received a bite from what’s thought to be a brown snake.

She was half way up the Mount Coolum trail at about 10am when the incident occurred.

She was helped by fellow hikers who kept her calm before a dramatic helicopter rescue got underway.

Fortunately for the hiker, there was an off-duty paramedic walking about 10 metres behind her, who also sighted the snake.

Emergency services were called and paramedics walked up hundreds of stairs to reach the hiker.

RACQ LifeFlight arrived and loaded her into the helicopter, while other hikers recorded the spectacle on their phones.

The woman is in a stable condition at Sunshine Coast Hospital and the venom did not make its way into her bloodstream.

Paramedic Denise Boyd, who attended the bite victim, provided tips on what to do in case of a snake bite.

“The important thing is to keep nice and still, nice and calm, and not move until help arrives,” she said.
