Diner hits out at cafe's 'atrocious' attempt at Australian classic

A trendy bakery has been accused of committing an outrageously offensive crime against Australian culture.

A customer at a “fancy” bakery in Sydney’s Upper North Shore claimed the bakery fleeced him of his right to an even spread of Vegemite on his toast.

Evidence of the supposed “Un-Australian” act was shared to Reddit on Monday by user MediocreAnchovies.

“What the f**k is this poor excuse for Vegemite on toast. Absolutely taking the piss,” he wrote alongside a photo showing a dismal amount of the yeast spread.

Two slices, which allegedly set the man back $6, had three spots dotted on the bread, which also looked to have been given an uneven spread of butter.

He wasn’t the only one unimpressed, as several others joined in slamming the bakery’s attempt of the Australian classic.

“What the f**k is this atrocity? Name and shame them brother,” one person wrote in a reply to the post.

Another poked fun at the all-too-familiar up-marking of prices in certain styles of establishments.

“That's called ‘artisan Vegemite on toast’, it's just like regular Vegemite on toast but it costs five times as much and has less Vegemite on it,” they wrote.

“It's all the rage now with the trendies, along with the mortgage-destroying smashed avocado on toast.”

Others labelled it an “absolute outrage”, an “abomination”, “unacceptable” and “Un-Australian”.

Another Reddit user suggested it was time for a “Royal Commission”.
