Desperate plea after person dies trying to save stranded animal
A fire department has issued a warning on social media, after a person died trying to save an animal in treacherous conditions over the weekend.
Parts of the US have seen freezing temperatures recently, with snow blanketing much of the Midwest, and parts of Ohio receiving 8 to 13 centimetres of snow by Sunday.
According to Ohio’s Litchfield Fire and Rescue, local authorities and rescuers were busy throughout Medina county on Saturday.
On Facebook, the Fire and Rescue department said the county’s water rescue team carried out two ice rescues at the same time, sadly one of which resulted in a fatality.
Authorities issue dire ice warning
The death prompted the authorities to issue a warning about ice on ponds and what not to do if your animals go out onto the ice.
“We can't stress enough DO NOT GO OUT ONTO THE ICE AFTER ANIMALS!” Litchfield Fire and Rescue said on Facebook.
“There is no safe ice on ponds in the area. Unfortunately one of the rescues turned into a fatality.”
Sharon Township Fire Department shared Litchfield’s Fire and Rescue post and reiterated the message of not following animals on to ice.
The fire department instead urged people to call for help and authorities will be able to get the animal safely off the ice using the correct equipment.
There is no further information available about the victim at this time.
