Family's near fatal road trip as 'elderly driver falls asleep at the wheel'

The terrifying moment a family came within seconds of tragedy after an elderly driver fell asleep at the wheel has been caught on dashcam.

Adelaide man Dave Richman was towing a caravan with his wife and nine-year-old twins just outside Bright in Victoria’s northeast when a split-second decision saved their lives.

The heart-stopping dashcam footage shows a car coming straight for them when at the last minute Mr Richman swerves to the opposite side of the road to miss the car and avoid a potentially fatal crash.

However the quick decision caused the family’s caravan to wobble dangerously behind but remarkably the father was able to bring it under control.

Mr Richman told 7 News the family was shaken and pulled the car over as the other vehicle came to a sudden stop on an embankment.

“He could have taken the people behind us out as well,” Mr Richman said.

He claimed the elderly driver of the oncoming car had fallen asleep at the wheel and his car needed to be towed after coming to an abrupt halt.

Luckily nobody was injured but Mr Richman has some advice for drivers feeling tired behind the wheel.

“Go and have a nap for other people's sakes," Mr Richman said.
