Cult product Lucas' Papaw Ointment recalled across Australia after 'contamination'

Several batches of a cult ointment, frequently used as a lip balm, is being recalled due to contamination fears.

Several batches of Lucas' Papaw Ointment are being recalled, impacting products in several sizes with various expiration dates.

"Lucas' Papaw Ointment is a topical ointment used to assist in the treatment of minor skin wounds, as well as skin dryness and chafing," the recall notice said.

The recall is due to microbial contamination, according to the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

"These moulds and bacteria pose minimal risk to the general population," the TGA said.

"There is a remote risk that individuals who are immunocompromised could become ill if they are exposed to these organisms."

The affected products and batch numbers are:

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 15g, Batch Number: 00522D22, Expiry: April 2025

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 15g, Batch Number: 00822E25, Expiry: May 2025

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 15g, Batch Number: 00822E26, Expiry: May 2025

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 15g, Batch Number: 00822E27, Expiry: May 2025

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 15g, Batch Number: 00822F01, Expiry: June 2025

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 15g, Batch Number: 00822F03, Expiry: June 2025

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 15g, Batch Number: 00822F06, Expiry: June 2025

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 15g, Batch Number: 00822E31, Expiry: May 2025

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 75g, Batch Number: 00522E04, Expiry: May 2025

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 75g, Batch Number: 00522E05, Expiry: May 2025

  • Lucas' Papaw Ointment 200g, Batch Number: 00822E30, Expiry: May 2025

The TGA is advising people to immediately stop using the ointment if their product is from the affected batches.

The batch numbers can be found on the "crimp" of the top of the 15g tube or the bottom of the 75g or 200g containers.

Customers with ointment affected by the recall can return it to the place of purchase for a refund, or Lucas'; Papaw Remedies Customer Service on 1800 861 852.

"No other batches or other Lucas'; Papaw Remedies products are being recalled at this time," the TGA said.
