One very savvy Coles shopper has managed to bag an impressive bargain haul, taking home $140 worth of groceries for only $37.
The single mum of two showed off her shop consisting of meat and pastries on a popular Facebook group, impressing hundreds of members who appreciate a good saving.
"FINALLY it was my turn to score the cheap meat!!" the Queenslander told other members of the group. "It couldn't have come at a better time for us! Single mum, 2 kids. Currently in the process of looking for a new home, working and studying full time. It's going to be a huge help! I'm so happy."
"The meat and croissants totalled $37, savings of $103," she said, noting that she managed to purchase the items at Coles Southport Park in the Gold Coast.
While the massive purchase may seem like an impossible feat, the photo she shared spoke volumes about how she managed to score such a great deal.
All for less than $5
The lucky woman took home meat items including lamb chops, chicken drumsticks, crumbed steak, osso bucco, chicken schnitzel, beef sausages, basa portions and pork cutlets. The most expensive item, the osso bucco, was sold for only $4.74.
She also managed to purchase a box of donuts for $2.87, packs of crumpets for 52 cents each, and trays of croissants that were going for $3 each.
"That's awesome. Great find!" someone commented. "To you and anyone else in your position... Single parent and studying AND working full time, I don't know how you do it and I think you're amazing. You no doubt get zero time for yourself as you create a better life for your kids. I hope you find many more great bargains."
"It always makes me so happy to hear of somebody getting a great scoop and the huge impact it has on their budget," another member said.
Not a late shop
The woman, who had taken advantage of Coles Quick Sale items, surprised fellow shoppers when she revealed she did all this shopping in an afternoon and not late in the evening as many would expect.
"It was 3:45pm," the author of the post revealed. "I definitely wasn't expecting it. I just wanted a snack after work and BAM! Ended up getting a trolley instead."
“Oh that's awesome. I just thought you have to go in real late to get them," someone commented in surprise. "Better than trying to win the lotto I say... especially when everything is so expensive."
When to find Coles markdowns
A Coles spokesperson previously told Yahoo News Australia that there is no set time to find heavily reduced items. "Markdowns do not uniformly take place at the same time across all stores. There are many things that can impact when this takes place including stock on hand, delivery schedules and team member rostering," the spokesperson said.
Coles will sometimes mark down products when they near their best-before dates to provide value and reduce wastage. "We know our customers love good value so when a product is near its best before date we often mark it down so it can be enjoyed for a cheaper price, instead of being wasted," added the spokesperson.
The spokesperson also pointed out that "food safety is paramount" to Coles, which is why the retailer encourages all customers to be mindful of use-by and best before dates.
