Aussie couple's 'one-in-a-billion' find in Coles egg carton

You'd be more likely to hold a winning lotto ticket than find a perfectly round egg – but the latter could be surprisingly valuable.

A trip to a Coles supermarket has ended in an apparently one-in-a-billion find for an Adelaide couple.

While the odds of winning the lotto are greater, the discovery of a round egg inside their carton of free range eggs could still be a lucrative drawcard.

Jack told Yahoo News Australia his partner found the unusual egg inside an 18-pack of Valley Park Farm eggs and realised they’d been sold “for a bit of money” in the past. So like any good opportunistic Aussie, he took a couple of photos and put the egg up for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

“I just listed it as a bit of a joke,” Jack said, admitting he hadn’t received any serious enquiries for the rare item at his listing price of $5,600 – a steep price even accounting for the rising costs of the pantry staple. Let's hope food inflation doesn't get that bad!

For those shocked that anyone would pay such big bucks for a round egg, one woman in the UK sold her chook’s “perfectly spherical” egg for A$915 in 2015. The egg was sold via an eBay auction, which attracted 64 bids.

Unfortunately for Jack, the only messages he’s received are from his mates. But he’s willing to lower the price to attract more interest.

“Maybe I list it back up for a few hundred and see if someone’s silly enough to want it,” he said.

And if all else fails, the egg could still make a perfectly good breakfast option.

Another round egg found in Melbourne

Last month, a woman in Melbourne found a round egg in a carton she purchased from Woolworths.

The footage was shared with 3AW broadcaster Jacqui Felgate, who claimed “the last one that was found sold for over $1400”.
