Coles reveals extra crowd control measures for Best Buys promotion

As Coles’ Best Buys promotion kicks off again, it has been revealed how the supermarket is managing the crowds amid COVID and the sale.

The Coles Best Buys promotion started on Friday September 18 and runs while stocks last at a number of stores across Australia.

The supermarket giant still advises people to maintain social distancing in stores – the length of trolley from team members and other customers – but the retailer has introduced extra measures for the promotion.

“We have a security guard and [at busier times] multiple team members managing the Coles Best Buys section to ensure customers are practicing social distancing,” a Coles spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia.

“In addition, there are signs around our stores to guide customers towards appropriate social distancing guidelines.”

Store capacity limits are subject to the supermarket’s discretion, depending on how many people are in-store at a time.

Coles launched the Best Buys program earlier this year to rival Aldi’s Special Buys deal.

The Friday launch was designed to inspire customers to get a jump on spring cleaning with an array of gardening supplies.

More than 20 new items hit the shelves at select Coles stores, all essentials to avid gardeners, including a 3-in-1 electric blower, vacuum and mulcher, a garden hose and self watering pot tools.

Coles and Bunnings have friendly blow-out over blower

Coles’ Best Buys catalogue went out on Wednesday, and one of the items advertised was a $39.99 blower and this started a tit-fot-tat pricing war with rival retailer Bunnings Warehouse.

Both Coles’ Icanic blower and Bunnings’ Ozito models are three-in-one items: they are both blowers, vacuums and mulchers, boasting a 2400 watt motor.

At the time of the catalogue launching, Bunnings had their Ozito blower advertised for $49.95, but in response to the more affordable Coles’ blower, Bunnings later dropped its price.

Bunnings took out at an ad with New Corp on Friday, lowering their price to $35 and even giving a shout out to Coles’ blower after beating their price offering.

However Coles then dropped their blower to $33.99 this morning, prompting Bunnings to drop their price further to $29, which Coles has now matched.
