Chris Dawson facing new charge of having carnal knowledge of girl between 10 and 17

Former Sydney teacher Chris Dawson has been charged with having carnal knowledge of a girl between the ages of 10 and 17.

Dawson is already facing a murder charge over the disappearance of his then-wife Lynette on Sydney's northern beaches in 1982.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge on Thursday.

The case became the subject of journalist Hedley Thomas’ internationally successful podcast, The Teacher’s Pet, which was published by The Australian newspaper.

The podcast also revealed allegations of sexual assaults and student-teacher relationships at high schools on Sydney's Northern Beaches in the 1970s and 1980s.

Police will allege in court Dawson engaged in carnal knowledge with a female student, then aged 16, in 1980.

Dawson was arrested at 12pm on Thursday and charged with the new offence.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court in August.
