Shocking twist after two men found stabbed to death outside house
Criminal charges may never be laid over the stabbing deaths of two men in a small North Queensland town despite police questioning a key witness for hours.
In a rare move, a coroner could be left to decide if it was self defence that led to the deaths of 37-year-old father-of-three Corey Christensen and 27-year old NSW man Thomas Davy.
The two men were found dead on an Alva Beach street around midnight on Sunday.
Key witness Dean Webber, 19, has since been released from custody without charge.
“At this point I don’t wish to put myself in his shoes,” Detective Inspector Chris Lawson told reporters.
“It is extremely complex, we’re dealing with a number of legal issues and we’re also dealing with a number of people.”
Seven News understands a short time before the bodies were found, Davy’s girlfriend, Candice Locke, went to a home seeking help. Webber, a young stranger, was inside.
Police are investigating if the men who died forced entry into the home and if Webber acted in self-defence.
Police don’t know why Locke went to the house for help or why the violence erupted.
“We’re trying to backtrack and establish where people have been and who they’ve been with, what they’ve seen,” Detective Inspector Lawson said.
Burdekin MP Dale Last said the deaths had “sent a shockwave” through the community.
“It will take some time for them to get over it,” Mr Last told reporters.
