CCTV captures Aussie tourist's dangerous scooter move in Bali

The 18-year-old was forced to pay for damages caused to the shop.

A joyride on a scooter turned sour for an Aussie tourist in Bali when he allegedly lost control and smashed into a shopfront window.

CCTV footage from the damaged tobacco shop captured the moment the 18-year-old approached the busy intersection on the vehicle and the dangerous move that caused the smash.

The teen was headed towards Kuta Beach Road in the popular Kuta District when the incident occurred at around 11.30 on Monday morning. According to police, the 18-year-old had two friends on the scooter with him, local media reported.

CCTV footage captures scooter crash

Video footage shared on Instagram shows the vehicle approach and stop at an intersection on the road outside the shop as it waits for a gap to turn right. It proceeds to take off slowly but wobbles a bit before accelerating straight into the store.

The impact of the crash is out of view of the camera that captured the incident, but the sound of glass — reported to be 13mm thick — shattering can be heard clearly in the clip. A man, believed to be the shop owner, saw the whole thing unfold before approaching the scene.

Teen forced to pay for damages

Police have since revealed what they believe caused the smash. According to local media, the teen revved the scooter as he took off on the road, but failed to turn, which caused the scooter to crash.

"It was an unfortunate accident caused by [the driver] losing control [of the vehicle]," Kuta Police Chief Yogie Pramagita said, according to Coconuts, an Indonesian-based news outlet. "The incident was resolved amicably, with the motorbike rider compensating for the damage caused to the store."

The teen sustained minor injuries to the chin and suffered some scrapes on the leg, police said. There was an estimated $600 (IDR5.8 million) in damages to the store, which the teen paid up. The scooter he was riding was also damaged.

Crackdown on bad behaviour in Bali

It comes as Indonesian officials continue in their attempts to put an end to unruly behaviour by tourists. On Monday it was announced that Aussie travellers heading to the popular holiday island will soon be handed a list of "Dos and Don’ts” when entering so they cannot feign ignorance about what is and isn’t acceptable on their holiday.

In April, an Aussie expat was reportedly booted from the holiday island after she was caught on camera arguing about a $25 fine for not wearing a helmet on a scooter.
