Camilla's awkward curtsey to Queen Maxima

It’s not very often we see senior members of the British royal family curtsying to anyone apart from the Queen, and it seems Camilla has nearly forgotten how to do it.

The 71-year-old was pictured curtsying to Queen Máxima of the Netherlands at the Dutch embassy in London yesterday, during part of the monarch’s two-day visit to the UK.

In the snaps, the Duchess of Cornwall – herself a future queen – appears to be struggling as she put one leg behind the other in a deep dip.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles simply shook hands with King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, and greeted Queen Máxima with a kiss.

It was uncertain whether or not Camilla would actually curtsy to Máxima when they met, with royal experts claiming the rules around senior royals curtsying to each other are very vague.

The Order of Precedence in the UK outlines exactly which members of the British royal family are required to curtsy to whom, however, it’s different when it comes to overseas royals.

However, despite any initial awkwardness in their interaction, the two royal couples joked with each other before posing for a number of photos.

Later on in the evening, Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander attended a state banquet at Buckingham Palace, which was attended by Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate Middleton wore a blue Alexander McQueen gown and the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, which once belonged to Princess Diana.

The diamond and pearl headpiece dates back to 1914, when Queen Mary commissioned the piece from Garrard. It was passed down to her granddaughter, the Queen, who then gave it to Princess Diana as a wedding present in 1981.

The tiara wasn’t the only piece of jewellery of Diana’s the Duchess of Cambridge wore.

Kate teamed it with Diana’s Collingwood pearl and diamond drop earrings.

Queen Máxima also wowed in the Stuart Tiara for the dinner.
