Burglar leaves name and address at crime scene
A bumbling burglar believed to be responsible for several robberies has finally been nabbed after accidentally leaving his name and address at the scene of his latest crime.
Malcolm Pyke, 43, broke into a home in East Harrington, in England’s northeast, on March 6 and stole more than A$270 worth of cleaning equipment, police said.
But as Pyke fled, police said he accidentally left behind a black rucksack, which contained personal letters displaying his full name and address.
Police managed to track him down and Pyke faced Newcastle Crown Court on Tuesday where he admitted to burglary.
He also pleaded guilty to a separate burglary where he stole clothes off a clothesline.
The 43-year-old will serve four years’ jail.
Detective Sergeant Chris Raper-Smith of Northumbria Police’s Southern Burglary Team called Pyke a “prolific thief who has consistently proven a disregard for the law and the welfare of others”.
“Unfortunately for him, his latest offence, which was fairly unsophisticated, saw him leave behind a number of personal items which directed officers straight to his front door,” Det Sgt Raper-Smith said.
“There we found the stolen machinery which he had dumped outside of his address and it was safely returned to the victim.”
