Boy takes tiny chicken to hospital after accidentally running over it on bike

A six-year-old boy has been hailed a hero after rushing a baby chicken to hospital with all the money he had after accidentally running over and killing it with his bicycle.

Derek Lalchhanhima was cycling near his home in Sairang, in the Indian state of Mizoram, when he mistakenly killed his neighbour’s chick before doing everything he could to save its life.

Without hesitation following the accident, according to Facebook page Sanga Says, the boy “ran to a nearby hospital and with all the money he had, asked for help”.

A photo of the child clasping a bank note in one hand and the dead chick in the other, has tugged at the heart strings of thousands.

“Lots of love and good wishes. His goodness resonates. When you do good, good things come back to you,” someone wrote.

“This cutie-pie needs to come on a tv show with his good parents and the chicken,” another added.

Someone else congratulated the child, writing, “Well done young man! you truly are brave human.”

In light of his courageous act, the boy was honoured with a ceremony at school, where he was awarded a certificate and special shawl.

“In Mizo tradition different types of shawls are usually presented to esteemed guests and in olden days, to pasalțha (braves or warriors) who have accomplished great feats,” a post of him post-ceremony read.

“The shawl that is draped on him looks like a modified version of the “Tawlhloh Puan”, an honour given to those who have exemplified extraordinary courage.”
