BBC's The Split confirms return with Nicola WalkerBBC

The BBC has announced the return of The Split with Nicola Walker.

Nicola is set to reprise her role as divorce lawyer Hannah for a two-part special that reunites the Defoe family and many of their friends in Barcelona for a wedding.

The specials pick up two years after the finale of The Split, where Hannah and estranged husband Nathan Stern (Stephen Mangan) ended their marriage.

Hannah faces the possibility of finding love again as The Split returns, while her family and friends have all the emotionally-wrought reunions, break-ups and clashes you expect from a destination wedding.

Toby Stephens — who played a James Bond villain in Die Another Day and recently portrayed Poseidon in Percy Jackson and the Olympians — is among The Split's newcomers as the suave lawyer Archie Moore.

Nicola Walker will also be joined by returning Split cast members Stephen Mangan (Nathan), Annabel Scholey (Nina), Fiona Button (Rose) and Deborah Findlay (Ruth).

The Split stars Ian McElhinney (Ronnie), Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Glen), Elizabeth Roberts (Liv) and Alex Guersman (Gael) are back too.

Series creator Abi Morgan offered hints about the show's return: "In a world of brutal break ups and tantalising make ups, the Defoe family are invited to a destination wedding of their own, promising all that audiences have grown to love about The Split.

"Problematic prenups, scandalous wedding crashers, and low flying marriage proposals, as rom com meets gone wrong, in a chaotic and riotous weekend that guarantees to crack open the heart, before the last of the guests have gone home."

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, announced: "We know The Split’s millions of fans found it hard to break up with the Defoes, so before we delve into the heady world of [spin-off] The Split Up we couldn’t resist an extra treat in the form of these exquisite, sun-drenched specials from the wonderful Abi Morgan.”

The BBC has confirmed this two-part special will air ahead of the launch of a spin-off series, titled The Split Up, which introduces a new family of lawyers.

Viewers will follow the Kishans as their elite law firm in Manchester is threatened by the discovery of a family secret that could change everything.
