‘50 years’: Red Rooster roasts Macca’s launch

Red Rooster has taken aim at fast-food rival McDonald’s after it released a new menu item – and claimed it was the first of its kind.

Macca’s dropped the “never before seen” pineapple fritters and pineapple sundae’s earlier this month, prompting fans to rush out to try.

But the cult Australian chicken joint has challenged the claim, stating it has sold a pineapple fritter for “50 years”.

“They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” Red Rooster wrote on its social media after news of Macca’s new summer menu items dropped.

“We’ve heard others are trying to describe their new Pineapple Fritters as a “never before seen” menu item... Can’t relate... Ours have been around for over 50 years!”

Despite Red Rooster’s clap back, Aussies were quick to taste test the new McDonald’s items, with TikTok influencer Mark Polchleb labelled the treats a “game changer”.

“The batter is golden and crunchy, and the pineapple is sweet and juicy. No complaints,” he said of the fritter.

However Red Rooster’s fritters came out on top according to TikTok influencer Bec Hardgrave, who sampled both versions in a comparison video.

“I’m gonna have to give it to Red Rooster, it’s a little lighter on the batter, it’s a little bit sweeter,” she said.

“[McDonald’s] one is still super crispy and super delicious, the batter is a little bit thicker and it’s a little bit salty.”

Some didn’t rate the Macca’s pineapple fritter on its own, but said combining it with the sundae – a new “hack” that quickly garnered viral attention – was a “pineapple dream”.

“The pineapple inside is still cold, it’s fresh pineapple, it’s got a little bit of a thick batter on the outside. You definitely need ice-cream with this,” food blogger Nick Vavitis said of the fritter.

“The pineapple sundae itself, that is super sweet and really refreshing. This is a yes from me, big, big yes from me.”

Other’s echoed the tip, with Mr Polchleb saying the fritter “levelled up” the sundae.

“This was literally a game changer, this is what needed to be the McFlurry,” he said.

“A fritter and ice cream is honestly the perfect pairing, and this levels it up from a seven-out-of-ten to a ten-out-of-ten.”
