Tradie explodes at cyclists over roundabout act: 'Use your brain'

A furious motorist has been filmed abusing a pair of cyclists on an Adelaide road for riding slower than cars in a viral clip that has ignited intense backlash and debate online.

Lengthy footage of the altercation was posted online by one of the cyclists who bore the brunt of a tradie who was more than a little displeased with their presence on the road.

"Riding home recently, had a motorist pull over and get out of their car, abusing myself and another cyclist for almost 10 minutes because we were (legally) riding on the road and are slower than cars," he wrote when sharing the clip to Reddit.

"This was after illegally overtaking us on a roundabout at an unsafe speed and distance."

The disgruntled driver confronted the cyclists and launched into a bizarre tirade about the road rules, arguing he should have been given right-of-way because the cyclists couldn’t go more than "20 kilometres" under the speed limit.

"If you're in a car and you go 20km under the speed limit you'll get pulled over and lose your license," he wrongly claims in the footage. "What about you guys?"

"Why would you go then?" he asks, referring to the cyclists riding through the roundabout despite their apparent lack of speed.

"Think logical, you can't get around fast enough."

"What I'm saying is you're uncapable (sic) of applying to (sic) road rules like everyone else, go to the side until it's safe. It's like crossing a road," he tells them.

One cyclist responds by saying; "there's no minimum speed limit for a bicycle".

"See that's bulls***," the tradie shoots back, "See that's where you need to use your brain and be a human part of society..."

As the terse exchange continues, the man behind the camera interjects.

"Maybe you should work on your comprehension skills and learn how to write and contact your local member of parliament if you've got an issue with this, mate."

The man, although seemingly overcome with frustration, tries to have an earnest debate about the rights of cyclists before storming off in a huff after more than seven minutes arguing.

Despite ostensibly being annoyed about being slowed down, the irony that he spent such a long time arguing on the side of the road was not lost on many Reddit viewers.

"I always love those road rage videos. Idiot follows someone ... walks up to their car then screams about making him/her late," one person commented.

"Clearly this had nothing to do with delaying him," said another.

"'Think logical' says the guy standing in the bike lane with his car illegally parked," a third mocked.

$424 rule requires wide berth for cyclists

According to the description given by the cyclists involved in the altercation, the disgruntled tradie likely risked a hefty fine for speeding past the riders on the roundabout.

Most Australian states mandate specific distances required for passing cyclists on the roads.

Rule 144 of the Australian Road Rules states that drivers must maintain a minimum distance of one metre when passing cyclists at a maximum speed of 60km/h.

When driving in areas where speeds are higher than 60km/h, the gap increases to a minimum distance of 1.5 metres when overtaking a cyclist.

Drivers are given leeway to ensure they can follow these rules. For example, you can pull out into the middle of the road and into the opposite lane to overtake if there isn’t enough space to get past safely.
