Aussie homeowners discover ‘creepy’ hidden room

Yas and Mat had no idea where the window was in the house until a contractor told them they had a 'full-blown attic'.

Buying property comes with its risks and many new homeowners find themselves discovering quirks after moving in.

Yas and Mat, an Aussie couple who are renovating an old home, shared how they couldn’t find a window that could be seen from the outside of the house. After a contractor came to look at the roof, they were stunned to discover a hidden attic — but could not decide if it was creepy or cool.

“We couldn't find this window right at the top of the house,” Homeowner Yas shared on social media. “We had a contractor go in the roof and they said we have a full-blown attic up there. Being a little bit woo-woo this totally creeps me out.

“I don't want to go up there. But there’s a staircase, a window, that’s all I can see from here. Apparently you can see the water so maybe it was a surf checkout. Not sure let us know what do we do with it.”

Aussies suggest what to do with hidden attic

While most agreed that the feature was cool, the couple were inundated with suggestions about what to do with the space, spanning from book nook, playroom or parents’ retreat. Another suggested it could be a spare bedroom “for when hubby’s in the dog house”.

The couple are documenting their renovation after making an “impulse” purchase on the property.

“We put an offer on a house thinking it probably wouldn't be accepted. But it was accepted and now we have a giant mortgage and we’re going to try and renovate it with no renovation experience on a budget,” Yas explained.

The pair have started clearing roses, garden beds and grape vines from the old property. Inside the house, they’ve begun painting and replaced curtains and lighting.

Mysterious old home discoveries

It’s not the first time someone has discovered something mysterious about their home.

Last month, another homeowner found a narrow opening in their home and posted to social media questioning what it could be.

Sharing the strange find in the My Old House Facebook group, a woman posted a picture of a “creepy” little opening she found in her house. The strange feature looks like a very narrow doorway, measuring less than a metre wide and leads through to a separate tiny space.

“What is this? Literally 18 inches wide and framed out,” she wrote alongside a picture of the slim opening. She gave people very little detail of what was on the other side or where in the house the odd quirk was located.

While no one could offer a definitive answer, the general consensus on the most likely explanation was indeed for ironing board storage.

Aussie heritage homes expert Scott Lucas said: “One of the charms of owning and renovating a heritage property is trying to decipher what is original and if not, why previous owners have made the change."
