Customer reveals Aussie café worker’s ‘disgusting’ act
A TikToker has shocked people with her tale of an unwelcome ‘extra ingredient’ in her acai bowl.
LA bikini designer Sophia Kim says she was in Bondi on Monday when she got a craving for Oakberry, an international smoothie and juice bar.
But the 30-year-old was left with more than a sour taste in her mouth after witnessing “the most disgusting thing at this Oakberry".
“It was crazy,” she said.
In a video posted to TikTok with the words, “I was shook at Oakberry Acai in Bondi,” the Sydney-based businesswoman went on to explain what happened.
“The girl that was working there was cutting up the fruit, licking her fingers, putting the fruit on the cup, licking her fingers, serve the cup to other people then started licking her fingers,” she said.
“I told one of the workers there and I was like, ‘can I have this made by somebody else’.”
Social media outrage
The clip, which has since been viewed almost 118,000 times, angered locals across Sydney who frequent the chain’s Bondi, Coogee and Manly stores.
“No, OMG I adore that Oakberry, I’m going to cry,” one person wrote.
“This was honestly my fave thing to eat in Sydney,” someone else said. “Not now.”
“[It’s] a hard no from me,” another wrote.
While someone else added, “In this day and age? No thanks.”
But others were quick to leap to the business’s defence.
“You’re the meanest person in the world,” one person wrote. “Instead of supporting business, you bring them down. Hopefully you can realise the impact of your content.”
While in the TIkTok comments Ms Kim did go on to confirm that the employee was wearing gloves at the time, but was “licking the gloves that were on her hands/fingers”, some just didn’t seem to see a problem.
“It’s not that bad,” one user wrote.
“Builds up your immune system I guess,” another said.
“At least you know the acai must be good, if she licking her fingers,” someone else added.
“Extra flavour,” joked another.
Oakberry apologises and takes action
A spokesperson from Oakberry Australia said they were “very disappointed to hear about the incident” and that they had since spoken to Ms Kim, “who is one of our valued customers".
“The incident outlined in the video does not reflect the Oakberry standard of operations,” they told Yahoo News Australia.
“We expect a high level of hygiene and cleaning processes in all of our shops, and our staff are required to follow a very strict training guideline that covers all areas of shop operations.”
The smoothie and juice bar went on to say that “thankfully this appears to be an isolated incident” which it immediately addressed internally to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.
“In addition, we can confirm that we have reached out to Sophia privately to thank her for bringing this to our attention and have apologised for the incident.”
