Photos claiming to be some of the clearest ever taken of America’s notoriously secretive Area 51 military base have been published online by a group of “UFO investigators”.
The pictures have been taken with a powerful telephoto lens from the top of Tikaboo Peak, a hilltop across a valley from the secluded airforce base.
The images were released on YouTube channel, UFO Seekers.
While security at Area 51 is notoriously tight with access allowed only for those with the highest of security clearances, it is also a magnet for extraterrestrial enthusiasts.
Tim and Tracey Doyle, who run the channel, hiked to the top of the mountain to shoot the base, revealing their trips and what they saw along the way.
The 2.4 kilometre high mountain is about 42 kilometres from the base.
While it is not the first time amateur sleuths have scored close-up images, the Doyle’s pictures may be among the clearest.
Their pictures show vehicles moving around the base but, alas, there is no sign of the elusive aliens rumoured to inhabit it.
Wild theories have swirled around the activities at Area 51 for decades, with many believing the base near Las Vegas houses alien cadavers as well as live specimens.
Skeptics argue it is much more likely the detachment of California’s Edwards Air Force base’s secrecy could be better explained by the presence of top secret military ordinance.
