Little girl's incredible recovery after almost dying from the flu

A brave six-year-old has made a remarkable recovery after almost dying from the flu just days after catching a cold.

Father’s Day last September Victoria Janjos was a happy, healthy six-year old, but three days later she was fighting for her life in a coma.

Her father Goran Janjos said the child presented regular symptoms of the common cold.

What started as the flu turned into a severe bacterial infection that began in the lungs and spread to the rest of the body, Dr Roberto Cinetti, Royal Children's Hospital told 7 News.

Like a septic shock, her lungs and heart were failing.

Victoria was placed on a bypass machine, which took over her breathing.

Her liver was already damaged and she developed gangrene on her toes.

“Every limb was black in the early days. It was very, very scary,” Mr Janjos said.

After being in a coma for a month and intensive care for another month, Victoria had to learn to walk and talk again.

“On one day I held the wheelchair and I walked all by myself. Then I walked without holding the wheelchair,” a proud Victoria told 7 News.

After losing part of one toe to gangrene, she could only manage just one minute of rehab a day.

It is hard to believe Victoria was in a wheelchair just four months ago. While regular rehab has made a difference, the little girl’s determination is what helped her recover so quickly.

"Every week she's improving," her dad said. His wife Slavica agreed their little girl was getting "stronger and stronger" all the time, telling her parents "I can do it".

Her parents are forever grateful to the team at the Royal Children's Hospital.

"She is very lucky and very adorable,” Dr Roberto Cinetti said.
