In the centre lane of heavy traffic heading north on the M1 at the end of the working week was Jeremy Harvey's ute.

Behind him, a black Ford Ranger ute comes into view. It pulls into the right lane, into a small gap between two vehicles, then jerks back to the middle.

Mr Harvey's ute then leaves the road at the far left of the motorway, colliding with a Coles truck travelling in the left hand lane.

The terrifying crash cost Mr Harvey his life.

Peak hour traffic banked back more than 20 kilometres as rescue crews tried to free the 46-year-old from the wreckage, but he could not be saved.

The driver of the Coles truck however, was not seriously injured.

It is alleged the driver of the Ford Ranger left the scene, continuing on to pick up his girlfriend from Wyong train station. Police were waiting by the time he got home.

"One-hundred and 10 kilometres an hour - if there is a crash it will go horribly wrong, as it has in this case, which certainly the outcome being very sad and tragic for those involved,” said NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Chief Inspector Phil Brooks.

Police now want to speak to the truck driver whose dashcam captured the moment of impact.

“We need that driver to come forward,” Chief Insp Phil Brooks told 7 News.

“It would be great to be able to get a statement off that driver in order to assist us in the prosecution for this very sad and tragic offence.”

The 25-year-old faced Gosford court on multiple charges on Monday, among them dangerous driving causing death.

He did not apply for bail and will spend the next six weeks behind bars, ahead of his next court appearance.
