Woman describes creepy moment she found drone hovering outside her bedroom window

A woman has come eye-to-eye with a camouflaged drone that was loitering in the darkness outside her bedroom window.

Marita Maass, from Upper Hutt, Wellington in New Zealand, said she was reading at about 11pm one January night when she heard a buzzing sound.

At first, she thought it was a bathroom pipe, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Ms Maass says she pulled the curtains away and saw a drone hovering just two metres from her face with a "little red light".

"They would've seen me seeing them. I felt violated, like my privacy has been invaded. It was an absolute shock to me," she said.

She yelled at it, pulled the curtains, shut off the lamp, and leapt into bed shaking.

Ms Maass says she lodged complaints with the CAA and the Privacy Commissioner when police told her there wasn't anything they could do.

She said she has since been told she isn't the only one to have been in the situation.

People have said they have seen drones flying above them while their kids were out swimming, or while having a barbecue with friends.

"What bothers me is there's [companies] advertising drones for under $100 so any fool and his friend can buy one," she said.

Ms Maass is now calling for a law that says drones shouldn't be used near private homes.

There were more than 300 drone-related calls to CAA in 2017 and, in almost two-thirds of those cases, the drone operator was never identified.
