Major heatwave predicted across Australian mainland this week

Australia is set to swelter through a hot week this week, with the eastern states saying goodbye to the recent wet weather for some time.

The mercury is set to soar above 30 degrees in all capital cities, apart from Hobart in the coming days.

The biggest numbers thrown out there by the Bureau of Meteorology are 35 for Perth, 36 for Melbourne and a whopping 38 for Adelaide.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Ashleigh Langey said NSW would reach peak temperatures on Thursday, followed by a short cool change on Friday.

“Over the next couple of days there will be a high pressure system influencing the state with pretty warm conditions," she told News Corp.

"From Tuesday onwards it looks like we have got a low intensity heatwave developing, and by Thursday it will be a severe heatwave in parts of the state.

“There will be clear skies as well, which means things will heat up.”

As usual, Western Sydney will welcome most of the hot weather, with Penrith climbing to 42C and spending time in the mid to high 30s throughout the week.

How hot your state will get this week

The hottest day in Sydney will be Thursday with temps forecast at 34, and hotter yet in the west.

Penrith will hit 41 on Thursday. The city will cool to 27 on Friday.

Canberra will peak at 34 on Thursday after days of temps in the low to mid 30s.

Melbourne will remain partly cloudy for most of the week with temps reaching 36 on Wednesday and in Adelaide, locals will see 38 on Thursday.

But it will be one of the only states to see some relief for the following days with temps lowering to mid to high 20s.

Darwin will hit 35 all week except Friday, when it only will reach 34.

Perth will see 35 with a possible shower on Monday, followed by a few days in the high 20s before reaching 30 on Friday.

Temps will remain fairly stable in Hobart for the week though and is the only state that won't reach the 30 degree mark.

Brisbane is set to enjoy a sunny 32 on Friday and Saturday.
