Fisherman whose dinghy sank 'feared he would die'

A fisherman left in chilly waters after his dinghy sank off the South Australia coast has revealed how he feared he would die during the five-hour ordeal.

Sergio Bonetti, 63, was dabbing for garfish with three friends when they were flung into chilly waters at around 2am on Wednesday, two kilometres off Yorke Peninsula.

"We got a freak wave and because we lost balance a couple of guys moved to one side and the thing went over," he revealed.

"At any moment we were in danger of whatever, sharks, me giving up, falling in."

Bonetti and a 30-year-old woman were left clinging on for life as they held onto the capsized dinghy while a 40-year-old man managed to swim to the beach to raise the alarm.

Half an hour later, a 35-year-old man also survived the treacherous stretch of water and made it to shore.

Police launched the rescue helicopter and sea rescue squadron before local fishermen stumbled across Bonetti and the woman.

"We see a boat about 6.30 in the morning, you beauty, but it wasn't it was just a fisherman and he went straight past," he said.

"I got on top of the boat and started waving my arms at him."

The four confirmed there were life jackets aboard the boat but they had decided not to wear them.

All four were taken to the Wallarroo Hospital and checked out for hypothermia before being discharged.

In a bizarre twist, the woman was arrested and charged with refusing to give a blood sample, her name and address and property damage to the hospital.
