Army captain calls for prostitutes to be sent to front line to relieve soldiers' stress: report

An Australian Army captain has reportedly suggested prostitutes should be sent to the front line to help relieve combat soldiers of stress.

The Daily Telegraph reported Captain Sally Williamson wrote “improved intimacy and sexual interaction can help combat veterans with PTSD recovery” in a blog article.

The article dubbed “Sex And War – A Conversation Army Had To Have”, was reportedly posted earlier this month on the Army’s official Land Power Forum blog but removed several days later.

Capt Williamson wrote that it would be practical for soldiers to “have sexual relations in a safe, secure and controlled environment”, The Daily Telegraph said.

“The Army could contract Australian male and female sex workers to service troops in forward operating bases and air bases,” she wrote.

Insisting that her chiefs were too “nervous” to discuss the matter, Capt Williamson said sex helped relieve the stress of “loneliness or prolonged absence from family, friends, partners and spouses”.

Should it be too dangerous for prostitutes to enter the frontline, she suggested troops could instead be given sex toys.

“Another option the ADF could consider is facilitating safe and regulated sexual satisfaction through other means such as providing masturbation facilities or issuing sex toys,” she added.

If all of that should fail, Captain Williamson suggested the Army should go in the complete opposite direction and “be stricter in enforcing abstinence”.

It’s not the first time the topic has been discussed. In 1954 the French military deployed official ‘Field Mobile Brothels’ around the airfields.

However, former Army officer and Australian Conservatives member Bernie Gaynor didn’t wasn't having a bar of it, labelling Captain Williamson's plans as a "disaster".

“I can’t believe that an officer wrote this article in the first place. It is even harder to comprehend how it was allowed to be published.

“Five years after ... the ‘Skype’ sex scandal we now see the Army calling for a discussion on taxpayer-funded prostitution and open fraternisation. What a disaster.’’
