WATCH: Man falls into raging river attempting to rescue woman

Rescue attempts to save a woman from a raging river have almost ended in tragedy.

The woman can be seen holding on for dear life on the edge of the raging Guatapuri River, in Columbia on November 19.

She clings onto a branch as the rapids violently rush past her, threatening to pull her downstream.

A crowd watches on in shock.

"Oh my god, the branch is going to break," a witness says.

Such is the force of the current, first a man in a yellow T-shirt is swept past her by the rushing water.

But she’s not alone. A man steadily climbs down the tree to try and rescue her.

Closer to the shore, and in the shades of the forest, another man emerges wading through the water behind them to help.

But as the man climbing down tries to reach out, another person gets washed down the river and grabs the branch. The sheer weight of all three clinging on against the strength of the current rips the branch free.

They all get washed downstream – one of them splashes violently, fighting the current.

However, the crowd soon begins to cheer. Off-camera the group appears to have been saved from the river.

A woman in the crowd smiles, clasping her hand together thankful the group are now safe.
