Son of woman mauled to death by her own dog 'haunted' by mum's final moments

The son of a Canberra woman savagely killed by her own dog says he's struggling to come to terms with his mother's death, haunted by her final moments.

Tania Klemke died in her Watson home in the early hours of Wednesday morning after her pet dog Simba attacked her and a male guest.

"I still can't believe it, I've lost the most important person in my life, the woman that gave birth to me, the woman that made me who I am today," Cody Baker told ABC.

"All I can think about is how it went down and I can hear her screaming for her life."

As police arrived on the scene they were forced to shoot the dog after they too were attacked by the pet.

Mr Baker, 22, has since returned to his mother's home, envisaging her and her pet opening the door and greeting him.

He revealed he had planned to buy his mother a car as a thanks for all she had done for him over the years.

"The fact that she can't watch her three kids grow and she can't watch her grandkids grow up hurts me so much," he added.

The ACT Government was already aware of the dog following another incident where it had attacked a person just a few months before Wednesday's fatal incident.

Police are continuing with investigations with a report due to the ACT Coroner.
