Woman filmed taking baby from outside daycare weeks after losing own child

A woman has been arrested after she was filmed snatching a baby from a childcare centre.

Daryl Shal, 20, had a stillborn just a month earlier but now faces five years’ jail after she was captured on CCTV leaving a childcare centre with baby Viktoria in Kiev, Ukraine.

Ms Shal saw Viktoria in a pram after the baby’s unnamed father left her outside while he popped inside to pick up his other daughter, the Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The father returned, found the pram empty and called the police.

CCTV footage shows Ms Shal fleeing with the bub.

She walks briskly carrying Viktoria in a carrier past a parent and their child who are none the wiser.

It’s this CCTV footage, which led police to finding the 20-year-old after a search involving 200 officers.

Police allege, after placing Ms Shal under surveillance, they found her buying baby clothes.

They then raided the shack the 20-year-old shared with her boyfriend at a nearby lumber mill.

The Sun reports Ms Shal was trying to make a getaway with the child and told officers she had a stillborn a month earlier and wanted a new baby.

Kiev police are also investigating claims she threw her dead child in a dump and are looking for remains.

Prosecutor Natalya Maksimets said Ms Shal was being held under house arrest but her partner will be released “fairly soon” as “we do not have any evidence he was involved in the kidnapping”.
