'Would you be my friend' Heartbreaking letter from elderly neighbour revealed

Marleen Brooks was left stunned after receiving a heartbreaking letter from her elderly neighbour asking if they could be friends.

The 37-year-old, from Missouri in the US, found the handwritten note from the stranger in her letterbox explaining all her friends had died and she was "lonesome and scared."

The letter was written by 90-year-old Wanda Mills and the pair quickly formed a beautiful friendship.

“Would you consider to become my friend. I’m 90 years old — live alone and all my friends have passed away. I am so lonesome and scared. Please — I pray for some one,” the letter read.

Ms Brooks, who had recently lost her own grandmother, made cupcakes and went striaght to Ms Mills' home to say hello, News Corp reported.

She quickly learnt that in the 50 years of living in the house, Ms Mills had never met one of her neighbours.

The elderly woman also had not been outside in seven years and only ever had visits from caretakers.

Ms Mills told her neighbour many of her family had died, including her husband, sister and son, and others lived interstate.

The neighbours became fast friends and Ms Brooks often visits.

After seeing the positive impact she could have by just spending a short amount of time with the elderly woman, she decided to try and help others.

Ms Brooks launched Pen Pals for Seniors to help match people with elderly people who are in need of a companion.
